About

September 29th, 2009

Flutes & Co started in 1994 as a flute band of 6 young players. 15 years later, with over 50 past members, we currently have nearly 30 members with an age range of 11-60 who come from both Cumbria and North Lancashire.

Under the musical direction of Suzanne de Lozey, the group rehearses twice a month at Castle Street Centre in Kendal, giving numerous public performances a year.

The number of flute players looking for the opportunity to play with others is always growing. One of our main aims is to provide challenging musical experiences for them and at the time have some fun and meet other flute players.

In 1996 we ran our first flute workshop day in South Lakeland with international flautist Wissam Boustany, which has since become a successful regional biennial event.

See the News section of our website to check for details of the next flute workshop. Since 1998 we have put on at least one self-promoted concert a year with, on average, 8 or more other public appearances annually. These range from: jointly-promoted concerts with other musical societies, fundraising concerts for other charities, entering music festivals, providing music for weddings, WI AGM concerts, street entertainment, playing in hospitals/nursing homes etc.

In 2000 the group became a charity under the name of Flutes & Co and since then, with the proceeds from our own fundraising efforts together with help from local and regional grant-giving bodies, we have managed to purchase our own piccolos, altos, bass flutes and contrabass.
